Orange Shelter

Our gate is locked unless we know people are coming. Please schedule a visit time with us before you make the drive out so we know to expect you.

During tours, open houses, and work parties the gate is just "latched" -- you have to get out of your car to open the latch, drive your car through and then latch the gate again so the sheep won't leave the property.

Driving directions

Rikki's Refuge is located in Orange County, 6 miles east of the town of Orange, 15 miles south of Culpeper, 30 miles south west of Fredericksburg, 30 miles north east of Charlottesville, 7 miles north west of the NW tip of Lake Anna, 13 miles west of Lake of the Woods, 2 miles north of Lake Orange, 66 miles south west of Washington DC, about 80 by pavement, 58 miles north west of Richmond, 30 miles south of Warrenton, 45 miles south west from Manassas.

From the Capitol Beltway take I-66 west through Manassas to Gainesville and then take Route 29 (which becomes 29/15) south west through Warrenton, continue on Route 29/15 through Remington and take the 29/15 sw by-pass around Culpeper, EITHER, take the Route 3 east (Fredericksburg) / 522 south (Unionville) exit and be careful to bear right almost immediately to stay on Route 522 when it splits from Route 3, continue about 13 miles to the stop light on Route 20, Constitution Highway and turn right, we're about 2.5 miles on the left, OR, take Route 15 south as it splits off from 29 just outside of Culpeper, continue about 17 miles into the Town of Orange, go through Orange and turn left on Route 20 north, we're about 6 miles on the right.

From the Capitol Beltway take I-95 south past Lake Ridge, Woodbridge, Dale City, Quantico, Stafford and take Route 3 west (towards Culpeper) at Fredericksburg, travel about 12 miles and at Wilderness (just before Lake of the Woods) turn left / south on Route 20, travel about 12 miles and cross Route 522 (stop light), we're about 2.5 miles on the left.

From the north west tip of Lake Anna take route 522 north and at Unionville turn left on Route 20 and we're about 2.5 miles on the left.

From Richmond take Route 33 (exit from 295 nw of the city between 95 & 64) north west, travel about 25 miles and take Route 522 north towards Mineral, pass Lake Anna and at Unionville turn left on Route 20 and we're about 2.5 miles on the left.

From Charlottesville take Route 20 north through Montpelier and through the Town of Orange, we're about 6 miles on the right.

From Lake Orange canoe down Clear Creek and up Berry Run or take Route 625 north to a right on Route 20 and we're about 2.5 miles on the right.

Here's details on how to find the refuge once you're on Route 20. Orange travel about 7 miles north. On the right you will pass Routes 612, 629, and 631, you will see the Orange County Airport on the left, pass Route 625 on the right, Route 600 on the left and the right, route 628 on the left, when you see a white board (horizontal, not picket) fence on the right slow down, pass that fence and turn right on Barr Lane our gravel driveway right next to the fence, if you come to a traffic light you went 2.4 miles too far. Coming from Route 522 heading south on Route 20, you'll travel 2.4 miles and pass route 617 on the right and 671 and 669 on the left, on the left you'll see a small green sign (like street sign) pointing to the right that says "Grasslands", slow down, watch for a white board (horizontal, not picket) fence on the left and turn left onto Barr Lane, our gravel driveway, just before the fence.

Now you're on our driveway and it's a long mile to Rikki's office. Slow, Slow, Slow. Please do not drive over 15 mph. The children and pets of our neighbors are sometimes playing on or along this road. About halfway down the driveway you'll come to our gate. This gate is locked when we are not expecting visitors or volunteers. Unless you are part of a scheduled work party or have made an appointment to visit the animals, be sure to call us before you come so that someone will be available to let you into the refuge.

If we are expecting you, the gate will be latched, instead of locked. This means you'll have to get out, undo the clip, open the gate, drive through, shut the gate and put the clip back on. If you don't lock up you will have to chase the goats and sheep and cows back home! Continue down the driveway to the parking area and come into the office.

All Visitors and Volunteers must sign in at the office. Please find a staff member or experienced volunteer who will be happy to sign you in.
