What Am I Doing Here?

Boss Lady   FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR KERRY HILLIARD

One might say that being the founder and executive director of an animal sanctuary was something that I have always been destined for.

As a child I was always rescuing injured and abandoned animals, and begging my parents to let me keep "one more" animal who had "just followed me home." In fact, I can't remember a time when I have not been surrounded by animal friends. I am deeply attuned to the individuality of each soul and every animal I have ever known has touched my life in a unique and special way.

My goals are simple. I want to heal the earth and her companions by touching lives, one individual at a time. In my daily meditation I pray that every footstep I take leaves the earth a better, happier and more healthy place for all. I believe I'm accomplishing my goals everyday at Rikki's Refuge. I have been involved in animal welfare for over two decades. Cats have been my primary focus, especially the elderly and those with special needs. I believe I have a true affinity for them. However, I have also rescued, rehabilitated, and fosterered other domestic animals, a few farm animals, and injured wildlife.

Over the years, and with guidance from many people, I have learned to provide intermediate to advanced medical care to my animals. I have the ability to handle all kinds of emergencies - - from birthing baby piglets to administering fluids. This is a real asset since most of the emergencies at the refuge tend to happen when our veterinarians' offices are not open! I'm very active in holistic health care, including homeopathy, acupuncture, acupressure, flower remedies, herbs, nutritionals, massage, chiropractic, and much more. I have received mastership in Reiki and certification to practice the energy arts of PSEB (physical-spiritual-etheric-body) and Psycho-Therapeutic Reiki on human and non-human animals. In fact, we have successfully used a number of these modalities on animals at the refuge when traditional medicine has failed them.

Although I live at the refuge and I am usually working on animal projects from daybreak to nightfall, I do find time for my "paying" job (I don't take a salary as the executive director at Rikki's and need to do something to pay my personal bills). I am THE all natural realtor in Virginia. With a specialty in Wildlife, Woods and Water, I can help anyone find an ideal spot to create a personal sanctuary. I can be reached at Rikki's Realty, (540) 854-6166 for all of your real estate needs. Of course I donate a portion of the proceeds from my real estate practice to help fund the work of Rikki's Refuge.
