National Pig Day!

Today (Sunday, March 1, 2015) is……NATIONAL PIG DAY!

10355840_10152149898692391_3820203480274805889_n

Pigs are extraordinarily intelligent. They are curious and insightful animals who are widely accepted as being smarter than young children of at least 3 years of age, dogs, and even some primates. Pigs are extremely social animals. They form close bonds with other individuals and love close contact and lying down together. Pigs are very clean, keeping their toilet area far away from where they lie down and eat. Even newborn piglets will leave the nest to go to the toilet within hours of birth. Pigs are very peaceful animals, rarely showing aggression. The exception, as with many animals, is when a mother (sow) with her young offspring is provoked or threatened. Wild pigs play an important role in managing ecosystems and maintaining biodiversity. By rooting, and thus disturbing the soil, they create areas for new plant colonisation. They also spread fruit plants by dispersing their seeds. Pigs have a tremendous sense of smell. The large round disk of cartilage at the tip of the snout is connected to muscle that gives it extra flexibility and strength for rooting in the ground. Winston Churchill famously said that “Dogs look up to man. Cats look down to man. Pigs look us straight in the eye and see an equal.” There are numerous stories of pigs that have saved the lives of humans. For example, a pet pig called Pru pulled her owner out of a muddy bog, and another, Priscilla, saved a young boy from drowning. The pig is the last of the 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac. The pig is seen to represent, fortune, honesty, and happiness.

Today is World Spay Day!

Today (Tuesday, February 24, 2015) is……WORLD SPAY DAY!

Between 3 and 4 million adoptable animals are euthanized in animal shelters each year simply because they do not have homes. These high numbers are the result of unplanned litters that could have been prevented by spaying or neutering. Spaying and neutering dramatically reduces the number of stray animals on the streets and in shelters.

Tiffy is seeking her Forever Home!

Tiffy is an Official Rikki’s Refuge Black Cat — She arrived at Rikki’s at the age of 6-months, as a semi-feral barn cat. In her 5 years at Rikki’s, she has learned to trust and love people and is completely domesticated! She is playful and affectionate. She is a beautiful long hair black cat with a tiny patch of white on her chest and some brownish-reddish highlights in her fur. Stunning!

Rikki’s has a fabulous re-sale shop in Fredericksburg, VA called Re-Tail. One of the best things about Re-Tail is the Kitty Adoption Room. Tiffy came to Re-Tail, hoping to find her furrever home, on March 9, 2014. That is almost a YEAR AGO. The other cats who arrived at the same time, have ALL found their furrever homes. But not poor Tiffy, the Black Kitty. Let’s not let Tiffy have a 1-year anniversary at Re-Tail waiting for her furrever home. Let’s MAKE IT HAPPEN NOW and help her find her a home with a family who is worthy of her love and affection before then. Please SHARE for Tiffy.

You can visit and meet her during store hours, see below.
