Happy Tails

Dakota dog
Dakota Powell, photo taken at his home in 2004.

Remember Dakota? He was one of our first dogs. Dakota came to us from a shelter in Shenandoah, Virginia just a few days before he was scheduled to be euthanized. This time it worked out -- many dogs don't get the chance.

Dakota spent a few years at Rikki's and then was adopted and moved to Asheville, North Carolina where he has been living happily ever since.

Need help with design, publication layout or PowerPoint work? Dakota suggests you contact his company. His person, Maggie, does the work and Dakota eats the biscuits she buys after getting paid!

Kashke cat
Kashke Doucette taken at his home in 2005.

Kashke was one of Rikki's first cats. This boy was 10 years old when he developed diabetes (no doubt in part to his former family turning him into a very FAT cat).

After the diagnosis the family was "not able to deal" with giving Kashke insulin and he was left at the vet's to be killed. Thankfully, the family didn't wait around to watch and this boy found a new home at the refuge. Then he was sent to a volunteer for "a couple of weeks" while Kerry was away and ended up being adopted by the volunteer.

Kashke gets insulin twice a day and has had some medical problems, but he takes it in stride. His new family has had him for over five or years now and he is doing well.
