Happy
Tails
Rachel (sitting) with Maggie (on couch). Maggie has since passed on.

I met Rachel on my first trip to Rikki's. She was one, ancient, toothless
old girl who gently jumped up on me and nearly wagged her tail off. I couldn't
stop thinking about her, so Miss Rachel came home with us the day after
Thanksgiving 2000. She was estimated to be in her teens at the time. We thought we
would give her a year or two of the good life until she passed over The
Rainbow Bridge. |
Well, Rachel is not only thriving, but regularly visits the
nursing home in order to help brighten the days of those who are no longer able to have their own pets. She also "mothers" the other geriatric dogs in our house. Rachel has seen a few come and go, always doting on the sickly ones. A few nights before Jake passed on, Rachel slept on his bed with him, resting her head on his back. We often find her cleaning the other dogs' ears and eyes, and nuzzling her stuffed animals. Every night Rachel jumps (yes, she is still very spry) on our bed long enough to give each of us a kiss, then she jumps down to settle into her favorite bed. We like to think she is tucking us in. There is no greater joy than adopting a geriatric or special needs animal. They give back so much. |
